Many people suffer needlessly when visiting the dentist, feeling anxious or downright frightened during dental treatment. Some people have such a great amount of dental anxiety that they continuously put off visiting their dentist. This is never a good idea. Good oral health depends on early detection and prevention, and those with dental anxiety may develop serious teeth or periodontal problems that could have been prevented. The longer you wait to see the dentist, the more opportunity there is for problems to set in. Maintaining regular six-month dental checkups allows you to stay on top of your oral health and prevent many of the problems that cause pain and require more in-depth treatment.
At Bella Smiles Cosmetic and Family Dentistry, we want you to feel comfortable during your dental visits. Our team is here to help you overcome your dental anxiety and regain your confidence about receiving dental care. Our office is equipped with the tools and technology that lead to more relaxing dental experiences and we offer several ways to assist you in receiving dental treatment while remaining calm and stress-free.
We also offer nitrous oxide sedation to calm your anxiety during dental treatment. Nitrous oxide is a gas sedative that has been safely used for many years. The effects of this gas are quick to take hold, leaving you feeling alert, but relaxed and calm throughout treatment. The benefit of nitrous oxide is that it wears off as quickly as it takes effect. This means that you are able to receive this mild sedative during dental treatment without having to arrange transportation to and from your visit. After treatment with nitrous oxide, you are able to safely resume normal activities.
Oral Sedation involves giving an oral sedative drug that is taken 1 hour before your dental appointment. A calming effect is induced that includes drowsiness and a hypnotic state. Patients given oral sedatives must be accompanied to and from a dental appointment.
IV Sedation is a form of conscious sedation in which you will be able to understand and respond to requests but you may not be able to remember much from the dental procedure. IV sedation induces a state of deep relaxation and a worry-free feeling. You will be in a dream-like state and time will appear to pass by quickly appearing as if you were “asleep” during the procedure. The effects of IV sedation can last after the procedure is over and you will need to be accompanied home after the appointment.
