Dental sealants are thin, protective coatings made from plastic or other dental materials such as tooth-colored resins. They are usually applied to the chewing surface (grooves) of teeth to act as a barrier against decay-causing bacteria.
Most often, the sealants are applied to the back teeth (premolars and molars). Their location in the mouth makes them difficult to reach when practicing dental hygiene, such as brushing or flossing teeth. Because of this, premolars and molars are more prone to decay.
Many times, we offer dental sealants for our younger patients because the treatment can prevent early decay. However, adults can also reap the benefits of sealants. In either case, dental sealants typically last for several years as a shield for your teeth before they may need to be reapplied. At Bella Smiles Cosmetic and Family Dentistry, —located in Sugar Land, TX—we offer preventative dental sealants for our patients who would like to keep decay at bay; book an appointment with our office today!
